A suburban Philadelphia school district embroiled in a webcam spying scandal has agreed to pay $10,000 to settle a fourth student's claim. Lower Merion School District spokesman Doug Young tells The Philadelphia Inquirer the school board approved the settlement payment Monday night.
The use of tracking software on school-issued laptops prompted a federal invasion of privacy lawsuit last year. The software used by the district allowed school employees to remotely active the laptop webcams and view the images it captured.
The district ultimately paid $175,000 to Harriton High School student Blake Robbins to settle that suit. The Inquirer report says two other students also received $10,000 settlements last year. One other suit is still pending.
