GammaTech Durabook for those extreme conditionsThere are a few so called tough laptops on the market, most notably are the Dell Latitude E6400 and the more costly Panasonic Toughbook, but now there is a new tough laptop around and it is called the Durabook D14RM and it is made by the US based computer maker, GammaTech.

From the machines designation, it is clear that this is going to be a fourteen inch laptop, which has been designed to work in extreme conditions where water, dust and even the occasional drop to floor is normal practice. The Durabook D14RM is definitely water and shock proof as tests have shown this, but there are issues with battery, in tests with Windows 7 in power saving mode the battery appears to have only been able to give the user 2.5 hours of usage, with is disappointing to say the least. The machine is powered by the 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T4400 processor, internal memory is handled by 2 GB of RAM, onboard storage is provided by a small 250 GB hard drive. This laptop uses an optical drive provided by a standard DVD±RW, screen size is an expected 14.1 inches with a handy 1,280 x 800 native resolution and the graphics will be provided by the Integrated Intel GMA 4500 MHD.

The GammaTech Durabook D14RM vital statistics are; weight: 6.7 pounds and dimensions (H W D): 1.9 x 13.8 x 1.5 inches. Finally running the whole show will be Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) operating system.

Once these specs are compared with the other machines on the market, the Durabook D14RM appears to be slightly over priced while being underpowered, which is not a great combination when the buyer would be looking for performance in extreme conditions and they are probably doing a job that requires more from a laptop.
