New Dell Laptops For 2011 – Latest XPS Range A StartThere is a new range of Dell XPS laptops that have just been released, and these will see us nicely into 2011. It is hard to know what market will be the most popular next year, but Dell is betting that this high-end media-featured notebook will be able to take the fight to rivals HP and Apple.

The new Dell XPS range has a higher class of finish than that of the Studio and Adamo range, along with a few hardware tweaks here and there. Prices start from $899 for the 14-inch, $849 for the 15-inch and $949 for the 17-inch. Crave has been looking at the hardware to see what you will get for your money, and you will be impressed. The basic configuration gives you an Intel Core i5 460M CPU, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard Drive – needs to be SSD -, and an Nvidia GeForce 420M Graphics card.

Macbook Air 13-inch

Posted in :

(added few years ago!)

Short Version: There will be no pleasing either side of the Apple fanboy divide with this review so I’ll say it up front: If you’re looking for an alternative to a heavier Apple laptop – a MacBook Pro, say, or an Apple Powerbook 170 – and you travel, the MacBook Air is an excellent choice. If you rarely travel and/or are not a Mac fan, you will probably be better served by a cheaper netbook. Features:

    * 13.3-inch backlit screen
    * Ultra-slim design uses no hard drive, weighs 2.8 lbs
    * Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    * NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 RAM
    * MSRP: $1299 base ($1799 as tested)

Pros:

    * Amazingly thin and light
    * Sharp screen
    * Solid battery life

Cons:

    * Underpowered for some tasks
    * No Optical Drive
    * Only two USB ports, few of the major I/O ports

You Can Never Be Too Thin Or Too Rich

Although we’ve already covered the MacBook Air on our sister site (oops, this is the link), I thought it would be fair to assess its merits in a more objective fashion. As it stands, anyone you show the new Air will agree that it is a handsome piece of kit. It works very well, as we know, and it contains no mechanical storage, which means everything excepting the small internal fan is completely silent. The solid-state drives (SSDs) inside allow this computer to boot in about ten seconds, or thirty on a bad day. Access to the filesystem is almost instantaneous although, in absolute truth, there is little performance difference between a standard laptop and this model especially considering the 1.86GHz processor. What you make up for in access speed makes the lack of processor speed seem less important.

Why Apple should make an iPad Air

Posted in : Apple

(added few years ago!)

Why Apple should make an iPad AirApple needs to make an iPad Air. By combining the best of both the iPad (touch interface) with the MacBook Air (mobile computing) Apple could very well build my dream product. I suspect is would sell like mad — although these days that would be par for the course for Apple.

What exactly is an iPad Air?

It’s a MacBook Pro with a detachable screen that functions as an iPad when removed.

Yes, we’ve seen similar ideas hit the market, albeit with abysmal results. Lenovo, for example, released a convertible tablet (S10-3t), which was essentially a netbook with a touch screen that could be rotated. In my books it does nothing well, and, despite the best of intentions, is a scatterbrained design.

GammaTech Durabook for those extreme conditions

Posted in : GammaTech

(added few years ago!)

GammaTech Durabook for those extreme conditionsThere are a few so called tough laptops on the market, most notably are the Dell Latitude E6400 and the more costly Panasonic Toughbook, but now there is a new tough laptop around and it is called the Durabook D14RM and it is made by the US based computer maker, GammaTech.

From the machines designation, it is clear that this is going to be a fourteen inch laptop, which has been designed to work in extreme conditions where water, dust and even the occasional drop to floor is normal practice. The Durabook D14RM is definitely water and shock proof as tests have shown this, but there are issues with battery, in tests with Windows 7 in power saving mode the battery appears to have only been able to give the user 2.5 hours of usage, with is disappointing to say the least.The machine is powered by the 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T4400 processor, internal memory is handled by 2 GB of RAM, onboard storage is provided by a small 250 GB hard drive. This laptop uses an optical drive provided by a standard DVD±RW, screen size is an expected 14.1 inches with a handy 1,280 x 800 native resolution and the graphics will be provided by the Integrated Intel GMA 4500 MHD.

Laptop nightmares: Scary systems with fatal flaws

Posted in : Others

(added few years ago!)

The Halloween season my be winding down, but that doesn't mean there aren't still plenty of scary laptops out there. Of course, the vast majority of laptops we review are pretty decent examples of technology. After all, there are only a handful of common components used in most systems, and things such as speed and battery life are, if not standardized, at least largely predictable based on the list of what's inside the box.

Laptop nightmares: Scary systems with fatal flaws

That said, we occasionally run into a laptop that just rubs us the wrong way. Maybe it's a key missing feature, or terrible design, or an unusable touch pad--or sometimes products simply don't work as advertised. We've compiled our own list of the scariest laptops of 2010, the models that either had one or more frightening flaws, or else were just dogs.

Review: New MacBook Airs still skinny on power

Posted in : Apple

(added few years ago!)

Review: New MacBook Airs still skinny on powerThe first MacBook Air laptop hit the catwalk in 2008 as an elegant but somewhat impractical statement about how far Apple would go to make the thinnest laptop ever. It wasn't very powerful, had a short battery life and started with a nosebleed price tag of $1,800. Apple has revamped the Air and introduced two models last week. Suddenly, the Air is one of the cheapest ways to get into the Mac line, starting at $999, the same price as the entry-level, plastic MacBook. That's quite welcome, as are some improvements under the hood. The cheapest Air has a screen that runs 11.6 inches diagonally - smaller than any other MacBook. The larger model, starting at $1,299, has a 13.3-inch screen, the same size as the old Air. Either one is thin enough to scalp someone if thrown as a Frisbee, and the aluminum shell is as eye-catching as before. But the Air models still represent a victory of style over function, and they arrive to face competition from a device the first Air wasn't compared to: Apple's own iPad tablet computer.

HP Envy 17 3D laptop arrives

Posted in : HP

(added few years ago!)

HP Envy 17 3D laptop arrivesHP has launched its 17-inch 3D Envy laptop this week in the US, with HP's UK office promising us that Brits will be able to pick up the machine 'in time for Xmas' in UK. It is the latest of the first few 3D laptops to hit the market over the last year, following earlier releases from the likes of Acer, Asus and Toshiba.

Packs AMD's 3D tech

The HP Envy 17 3D laptop features a nice and wide 17.3-inch 3D Ultra BrightView display and, unlike most of its competitors (which make use of Nvidia 3D Vision tech) this one uses AMD's 3D tech, coming bundled with the requisite pair of active shutter glasses. "With advanced 3D technology as well as Beats Audio and an HP Triple Bass Reflex subwoofer, this latest HP ENVY17 now also has the power and performance to deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience – just like in movie theatres," reads HP's marketing blurb.

Size Does Matter With the 11-inch MacBook Air

Posted in : Apple

(added few years ago!)

Size Does Matter With the 11-inch MacBook AirDon’t call the MacBook Air a netbook: Steve Jobs will slice you with it, ninja-Frisbee style. Assault by turtleneck-loving CEOs aside, the new Air is designed to hang in the category of cheap, low-power consuming netbooks. But can it justify its thousand-dollar price tag? Not really.

Apple’s Air taps a few sweet spots that most netbooks never come close to. The widescreen display gives room for a standard full-sized keyboard and glass trackpad, so it doesn’t feel crampy; the clickety-clackety of the keys are nice and Apple-y. The screen is a higher resolution at 1,366-by-768 pixels (compared to 1,024-by-768 pixels on most netbooks) to give a sharp, clear picture. It’s also disconcertingly quiet — there’s virtually zero fan noise.
